Home again

October 29th, 2007

I was at Berlin 24.10–29.10 visiting my girlfriend. Just got back home. While I managed to miss Arktista Vimmaa –festival, I did see some great live acts at Berlin. On my birthday 25.10 we went to see Bonobo at Lido (first time in Berlin btw). It was great, we both enjoyed it very much. It is interesting to notice how Bonobo has evolved from sample based artist to a full grown soul/acid jazz band. They did play couple of Animal Magic classics tracks too! Recommended.

Lido, Berlin

On friday we went to Club Maria where an event called “Bessere Welten”(a better world) took place. It consisted album release gigs by Magnum 38 and Uusitalo (aka Luomo/Vladislav Delay). I did know what Uusitalo was going to be but Magnum 38 was a bit surprise. Sort of techno/glitch/noise with grasp of punk. Well he has his roots on punk and rock music as I learned later. Surprisingly danceable music though.

I was a bit anxious to hear Uusitalo and it didn’t disappoint me. Now I know why his other alias is called Vladislav Delay. It was all about delay. Well the night was good in all aspects but after listening minimal techno six hours straight up, we decided to leave 5 am, most satisfied.

As if those weren’t enough, we had booked tickets for Prefuse 73’s gig on sunday at Berghain/Panorama bar (with support by Nobody). Friend of mine told me that when he saw Prefuse live, the sound was all fucked up. And it sure was. I have always prefered Prefuse 73 as beautiful, melodic listening experience but in live it was annoingly noisy. Still, the rhythms were quite angular and assertive. Mostly because of the live drummer. Furthermore, the night ended unexpectedly early. The gig started like 22:30 and the place was closed by midnight so in that way it wasn’t very rounded evening at all.

All in all it was great trip to Berlin, again.

Dust of the Stardust

October 22nd, 2007

Yay, KynyNasty was supposed to be about movies too, but I haven’t wrote anything about movies yet. So here is a bunch of selected reviews from past few weeks. I’m not the right person to do any kind of “in-depth analysis”, so this is my style of review. What kind of feelings it invoked, sorf of keywords to myself.

Im Staub der Sterne (In the Dust of the Stars) (1976 DDR)
Director: Gottfried Kolditz
Sci-fi
Source: TV (Yle-Teema)
Feelings: Psychedelic, silly, surprising, non-sense, didn’t-see-it-coming, 70s, retro sci-fi, ddr,
star trek, adventurous
Closing comments: Hilarious bearded man in a blue jumpsuit
Worth watching? Absolutely, if you are looking for rare eastern bloc sci-fi

Stardust (2007, UK/USA)
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Fantasy/adventure/romance
Source: Theater
Feelings: British, charming, fabulous, queer pirate, witches, journey, unexceptionally good, based on novel, not corny, not-the-usual-fussy-action-comedy-disney-crap, eye candy.
Closing comments: Grandma would like this too.
Worth watching? Definitely. Something for everyone.

Tideland (2005, Canada/USA)
Director: Terry Gilliam
Fantasy/Gilliamism
Source: Theater
Feelings: typical for director, surrealistic, black comedy, Alice in wonder(gilliam)land feeling, childhood, annoying retarded person, slant, puppets, talking animals, nostalgia, amazing performance, perverse
Closing comments: Airy fairy phantasmagoric play.
Worth watching? Yes, for fans of Terry Gilliam. A plot would be nice.

Daft Punk’s Electroma (2007, French/USA)
Director(s): Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo
Sci-fi/Experimental
Feelings: artful, demanding, hiking sequence, need-to-focus, non-movie, silent, exquisite, stunning soundtrack, androids, kärlek, emotionally challenging
Closing comments: Silent experimental masterpiece about robots
Worth watching? As a fan of Daft Punk yes, the soundtrack is absolutely brilliant (no Daft Punk though)
****

Check this ending scene of Electroma. Not quite anything I’ve ever seen before. Not much happening but the song (Jackson C. Frank — Dialogue) is so touching! Be careful, you might burst into tears.

Lentävät Luupäät (2 x 12 inch)

October 15th, 2007

New Finnish release! All the music on this record are sampled or influenced from a Finnish movie “Lentävät Luupäät” (1984). Here is a vid I made a while ago. It combines the best moments of the movie. (don’t bother unless you understand Finnish.)

The movie includes this infamous bassline by Aarno Raninen. Big up for releasing this!

One Step Ahead

October 14th, 2007

Phew. Last night Tes La Rok and Dead-O were playing dubstep at Ilahu, Rovaniemi. Though there wasn’t enough bass it was still jolly good. Lots of dubplates and unreleased “finnstep”. Few clips, check it out.

Too much!
