Bust a Move

Young MC with a classic (and happy) funky rap hit for these (and those) nasty hot summer days:

“…1989 single by the rapper Young MC. It won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance. It appeared on his album Stone Cold Rhymin’ and was his biggest hit, reaching #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the charts in Australia. The song featured guest vocals by Crystal Blake and bass guitar by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, both of who also appeared in the video. The song has been featured in countless television programs and films.” -Wikipedia

One of my favourites. Bust a move and enjoy!

The Rah Band – Electric Fling (1978)

The Rah Band – Electric Fling (320 kbps)

Featured on the Slow Motion Disco vol.1, Electric Fling was first released as 7″ in 1978. Behind the band was multi-instrumentalist / arranger Richard Hewson who worked together with Herbie Hancock, Fleetwood Mac, Diana Ross, Art Garfunkel, Chris Rea and Al Stewart to name a few. Somewhat skweeeish track imho.

Btw. There’s an ongoing campaign at Funky Town Grooves. Head there for huge may sale and grab a few cd’s. These remastered albums are normally quite pricey (13€ and more) so 3.49£ is a bargain.

The Gap Band – You’re So Cute (320k)

Shoulda have posted this already last summer like I was planning to. Oh well and whatever. Life goes in cycles they say. Is that meant to be understood so that sometimes you’ll lose some good things, and sometimes you’ll find some good things? Oh so obvious, phew? Anyways, I’ll be repeating myself from last autumn: “Hmmm. Am I going out this weekend, and if so, am I going to drink alco or coffee – and should I also try to pick up on women?” Ain’t got no thing anymore so it should be quite obvious. It’ll be two days of playing records for possibly the most drunken student crowds of the year. It’s the few days before 1st of May that are times of heavy celebration for finnish students.

Me being such a lazy boy sometimes and not forcing myself to check if this is a fact or not – but anyways – I do think this cut is an exclusive for original soundtrack album “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka”. Movie’s Directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans.

So the coming weekend… On thursday I’ll be playing some nu-discoish/house/techno/something in between of those – here (flyer for the event):

On friday (and of course thursday also) hopefully like this. On friday I might be slipping towards electro-house and dubstep, basicly whatever “rocks the party”, “bangs”, “slams” and so on. 4×4 ftw, though.

Sly & Robbie – Yes We Can Can (1987)

Sly & Robbie

Sly & Robbie – Yes We Can Can (320k)

This could maybe be described as a cover version of a cover version. The Pointer Sisters made a cover of Yes We Can which is a song by Allen Toussaint with Lee Dorsey on vocals. Then Sly & Robbie got also down with it.

I bought the Sly & Robbie LP “Rhythm Killers” in summer 2006. It’s the album that has “Yes We Can Can” in it. I was expecting some reggae or dancehall stuff when I bought the LP. Boy, was I disappointed at the time. Anyways this tune I was feeling already then since it’s been used in the opening sequence of a Finnish comical television show Pulttibois. Nowdays I find “Rhythm Killers” being a solid album fusing funk, new wave, hip-hop, and even some rock stuff with hip-hop and Jamaican styled vocals. People like Bill Laswell, Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell were part of the crew making the album.

A review in Rolling Stone magazine puts it like this:

Rhythm Killers is a thirty-five-minute dance party full of surprises and strange noises — you never know when Dunbar will start playing heavy-metal drums or someone will whistle the theme to Masterpiece Theatre. Bridging classic funk and early hip-hop, Rhythm Killers sounds like the Great Missing DJ Set — albeit one played by live musicians with perfect telepathy.
