Skweee producer, other half of Mr Velcro Fastener, and also being one of the people behind the Harmönia record label among other things, Mesak mixes here a little bit of this and that together: older downtempoish electronic music, skweee, and some stuff I’d describe just as beats (all these new slow tempo-synthy-j dilla influenced-lazer beats-whatever). Skweee combines simple synth leads and basslines with funk, r’n'b or soul-like rhythms, overall rendering a stripped-down funky sound. The name Skweee was coined by Daniel Savio, one of the originators of the emerging sound. The name refers to the use of vintage synthesizers in the production process, where the aim is to “squeeze out” the most interesting sounds possible.

Skweee, or “Scandinavian Conflict R ‘n’ B” to give it it’s full title, is a genre and a movement that’s emerged around the (respectively Swedish and Finnish) labels Flogsta Danshall and Harmonia. Surfacing mostly on 7” vinyl, the sound is a mismatch of boogaloo electro(nics) and modern, Timbaland/Neptunes-style glitch/bling, seemingly created on equipment available well before you’d ever heard of Timmy and Pharrell. Fuzzy-felt 8-bit synths and crunchy, bit-crushed drum hits dry-hump your ears like Rodney Jerkins trying to craft Beyonce a hit with only an N.E.S. and a minidisc to hand.

Finally got down and listened this through, and oh boy, isn’t it just the way I like ‘em to be! Rap/electro/electro-funk with some boogie & freestyle cuts thrown in seamlessly.
