Laid Back… With KynyNasty

With a couple of rarities (Kerim Khan, Phil Steele), exclusive track (Topless), essentials (Holy Ghost!, Ali Love) and all-time personal favorites (Laid Back, Seymour Bits, Roy Davis Jr) I’m quite comfortable with this new live dj mix. Electro soul satisfaction guaranteed.

Mix of The Week #14 – Mesak – MIX AUS 20 10

Mesak – MIX AUS 20 10 – stream or download from http://soundcloud.com/mesak/mix-aus-20-10.

Toppen! Skweee producer, other half of Mr Velcro Fastener, and also being one of the people behind the Harmönia record label among other things, Mesak mixes here a little bit of this and that together: older downtempoish electronic music, skweee, and some stuff I’d describe just as beats (all these new slow tempo-synthy-j dilla influenced-lazer beats-whatever). And yeah, BBC Radiophonic workshop’s fame-dame Delia Derbyshire also included as is everyone’s favorite Omar Soleyman. So once again: toppen!

I also really do recommend you to grab Mesak’s latest album “School Of Mesak” (pictured above) out on Harmönia. For example these shops can provide – boomkat: digi/vinyl – bleep: digi/vinyl.

Tracklist for the mix:

Mix of The Week #13 – Stickem – Let Skweeedom Ring!

Stickem – Let Skweeedom Ring! mix. Get it here: http://skweee.com/let-skweeedom-ring

Skweee combines simple synth leads and basslines with funk, r’n'b or soul-like rhythms, overall rendering a stripped-down funky sound. The name Skweee was coined by Daniel Savio, one of the originators of the emerging sound. The name refers to the use of vintage synthesizers in the production process, where the aim is to “squeeze out” the most interesting sounds possible.

Or slightly less prosaic:

Skweee, or “Scandinavian Conflict R ‘n’ B” to give it it’s full title, is a genre and a movement that’s emerged around the (respectively Swedish and Finnish) labels Flogsta Danshall and Harmonia. Surfacing mostly on 7” vinyl, the sound is a mismatch of boogaloo electro(nics) and modern, Timbaland/Neptunes-style glitch/bling, seemingly created on equipment available well before you’d ever heard of Timmy and Pharrell. Fuzzy-felt 8-bit synths and crunchy, bit-crushed drum hits dry-hump your ears like Rodney Jerkins trying to craft Beyonce a hit with only an N.E.S. and a minidisc to hand.

This mix showcases many faces of skweee, from its more synth-pop oriented styles to electro-funkin’ licks.

1983 Camira

Roskow & Dj Runex – 1983 (MP3 – 320kbps – 32:37min – 74,66Mb)

Finally got down and listened this through, and oh boy, isn’t it just the way I like ‘em to be! Rap/electro/electro-funk with some boogie & freestyle cuts thrown in seamlessly. All from the 80s – and to be exact from 1983. Expect drum machines, synthesizers, and serious grooves. Kudos to Ionik of Traveller Records & Kojak Giant Sounds blog who uploaded this gem originally.
