Carrara — Follow Me

October 11th, 2007

Gosh! This time we got a what-the-fuck-italodisco track titled ‘Follow Me’ by Carrara. This track belongs to the category when things go so bad that it becomes good. This track is also a good survey to determine how deep you are in the italoshit. It’s also a good measurement of your sense of humour!

Yes, this is the back cover the single. I think it’s among the lamest covers I’ve ever seen. You can’t possibly look more dull, can you ? Quite often it’s other way around. The duller cover, the greater tune but in this case the cover applies pretty much to the music aswell.

Carrara — Follow Me (discomix)

Ok. First thing that expresses itself to the ear is tempo. Is this supposed to be really danceable discomusic? It hardly beats the 100 beats per minute (and I think I might have recorded this track with pitch +3 or +4 by accident). It’s more suitable for played as the last one of the night (Illan viimeinen hidas) if you know what I mean. Hands in the back pocket of your jeans.

Yeah, so far nothing fancy, nice bongos and typical italo drumsounds and synths with very generic preset sounds. 0:43 first “Herostab” as those synth stabs are called by some people. Nice but what happens at 1:03 ? Suddenly a jolly melody comes out of the closet and totally changes the mood of the track! With this track, you really can’t predict what’s the next thing to come. And then it happens again! What’s with the heavy guitar at 1:22? Acceptable in the 80s? Phew!

My favourite thing about this track is probably the horn/brass sound that appears first at 1:35. It kind of reminds me of Kirka’s ‘Surun pyyhit silmistäni’ song (check the horns right at the beginning).

As if it wasn’t enough, again the track catches you off-guard! Suddenly a piano starts rolling out at 1:41. Now that could be straight out from Emmerdale tv-theme with 3x herostabs and added heavy guitar! Cold-blooded italodisco as I would say.

If you survived to this point and enjoyed, you’ll also have fun with the rest of the track. Personally I recommend listening this in the most terrible hangover. It works.

I think they are on to some stuff. Check the expression on the guys face.

Sig — Älä sinä huoli (1983)

October 2nd, 2007

Sig (named after Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft) is a pop band from Raisio, Finland. The band was founded as a punk/new wave band late 70s. They (Matti Inkinen and Matti Ranta) wanted to set up a band which would be “Ramones from Raisio” powered with synths (Ramones on synths? Kompleksi anybody)?

I haven’t really listened to their other tracks but I have a hunch, a good hunch. Basically, it is quite generic pop-rock but they have managed to work out an interesting piece of music. “Älä sinä huoli” (= Don’t you worry) has a vocoder in it. Albeit a poor one but still! And of course a little of synthesizers and synthetic bass. The singing is just infernal but as a whole the track manages to entertain. During the time (1983), usage of vocoder was quite rare in popular music I think. At least in Finnish music. Perhaps there is an option to arrange remix or edit? Perhaps, maybe, certainly!

Well here is the piece. Enjoy if you dare.

& Jokke — Naisen Haluan">Jakke & Jokke — Naisen Haluan

September 19th, 2007

The first actual post is about some rare finnish disco-rock coversong called ‘Naisen Haluan’ (= I want a woman) by Jakke & Jokke.
I found this song couple of years ago from the album ‘Hittiparaati 10′ (1979) which is a compilation of finnish pop songs. This ‘Hittiparaati 10′ was actually in a sleeve of ‘The best of Italo-Disco vol. 10′ which I found from local second-hand shop.

The song sounds kind of like Prince and to be exact, his Jamie Starr pseudonym in sideproject called ‘The Time’.
Especially the vocals but the rest of track is much more heavier with guitars and stuff. The electric bass sounds good. It has a short synthsolo towards to the end but it leaves you demanding more of it.

There aren’t much information about the performers Jakke & Jokke. Jokke is a pseudonym for Jorma Seppälä and he has arranged couple of songs for eurovision contest in 1985. It seems that they did not make it to the main contest. It also appears that they have had some kind of connection with Danny and Kirka. Jokke has composed few songs for Kirka and been also singing in the background. They are musicians at the very least.

As I said at the beginning, ‘Naisen Haluan’ is actually a cover of Supercharge’s ‘I can see right through you’ from the album ‘Bodyrhythm’ (Virgin 12118, 1979).

Supercharge is kind of British disco-rock band on Virgin label in late 1970’s led by Robert John “Mutt” Lange.

Supercharge — I Can See Right Through You (320kbps 16mb)

The original song is much longer clocking over 6 minutes while the finnish cover is 3 minutes. The latter part of the song consists breaks and stuff, ready to be sampled and suitable for doing remake or edit or whatever. There exists 12″ and 7″ of ‘Naisen Haluan’ with catalog# Polarvox rps 130. If anybody has a spare copy, please send me e-mail. The Supercharge single is not that rare if you look into right places. But beware, some people ask over 50 pounds of it while others are satisfied with 5.
