Russ Ballard — Voices (rayko edit)

January 26th, 2011

Get this, Rayko has 71 edits in his SoundCloud page. One might argue about whether all of them are necessary. I’ll say that not every one of them is needed but most of them are useful for dj sets. Releasing them on vinyl is a whole another matter…

Russ Ballard — voices (rayko edit) by Rayko

Two tracks by Russ Ballard became instant favorites for me when I was watching Miami Vice re-runs a year ago: Voices and In The Night. Can’t beat the 80s montages.

Zodiac — “Zodiac“

Zodiac — “Pacific“

A Latvian Rock-group from the era of Soviet Union. These two tunes are from their first release “Disco Alliance” LP which was apparently sold out immediately everywhere in the (ex) U.S.S.R. In other words — it was “a huge release” in its day. 1980 that is. These words describe the whole album quite well: maybe bit psychedelic & slightly progressive cinematic grooving rock + delicious synths.

Al Festa — Living After Death

Equally suitable for Top Gun or… Zombie 4: After Death! I’m getting Europe vibes through my spine.

Which type of cheese you like the most?

Neil Young — Sample And Hold (320k)

OooOooo Canada, what’s left after the olympics? In Finland they used to hand out vinyl copies of Neil Young’s “Lucky Thirteen” album to doctors. That was like in the nineties and they = medicine companies. Nowdays these “gifts” are more like Viagra mousepads or such (both true stories).

This is not deep knowledge or anything but Neil Young did have his moments with synthesizers and vocoder. “Sample And Hold” is a prime example of that. Here’s what was previously unreleased version of the song from the aforementioned “Lucky Thirteen” album (1993). Almost three minutes shorter original version came out on “Trans” album in 1982.

A detail to be noticed here: drum hits are nicely offbeat from time to time. And no doctors in my family.
